Documenting Stories With Intention
The journey of a porcelain plate begins with the careful selection of raw materials, primarily refined kaolin clay, feldspar, and quartz. These components are blended to achieve a smooth, highly plastic mixture, which is then shaped into the desired form using methods such as slip casting, pressing or jiggering. The formed plates are allowed to dry slowly to remove excess moisture and ensure structural stability before firing.
The first firing, known as the bisque firing, hardens the plate and prepares it for glazing. A thin layer of clear or translucent glaze is applied, enhancing the porcelain's smoothness and creating a non-porous surface. This glaze also provides the ideal base for decoration. The plate then undergoes a second, high-temperature firing known as the glaze firing which vitrifies the porcelain and glaze together, giving the plate its signature strength, translucence and luminous finish.
Once the basic plate is ready, decorative elements are added. Food-safe ceramic colors and printed designs are carefully applied using techniques such as hand-painting, decal transfer or stenciling. These colors are specially formulated to withstand subsequent firing while remaining non-toxic and safe for dining.
For added luxury, select areas of the design is enhanced with gold or platinum accents. These metals are applied in delicate layers or fine lines and then fired at lower temperatures, ensuring they bond securely to the surface without compromising the plate's integrity. The result is a piece that combines durability, elegance and artistry, ready to elevate any dining experience.
